Remedial: Audax 300km in Baler

05/29/2019 | Carmela Pearson

Once every 4 years, Audax Randonneurs Philippines schedule a remedial Audax ride/s for those who are aiming to: 1) nail their last Paris Brest Paris (PBP) qualifier, and 2) finish their last Audax ride for the season to reach Super Randonneur status.  Being a remedial audax, this is only open to a very few riders because this is basically unmarshalled even at the control points.  This is how they used to do it back then in 1897 and in the early 1900s.  In fact, some audax rides around the world still employ this type of riding up to this day.  This is called Euraudax and is the original form of the audax style that involves riding in strict group formation at a steady pace set by a road captain.  Trust is a major component so participants who are about to embark on this ride here in the Philippines are personally known to us... or at least their road captain. This is also the same format being used in most of the audax rides done in Audax Singapore.

As a background, in 2011 (a Paris Brest Paris year), Audax Philippines organised a remedial audax for the 200km and the 600km distances.  That year, we produced 6 600km finishers and 7 200km finishers.  In 2015 (another PBP year), we organised a remedial ride for the 300km and the 600km distances and had 7 600km finishers and had 5 300km finishers.  It is worth noting that a Randonneur from Audax Thailand, Nueng Winai, flew in to the Philippines just to do his last 300km PBP 2015 qualifier.  He not only nailed his ride but is still very good friends with us and with those he rode with up to now. :)

A few weeks ago, we decided to cancel the remedial Audax scheduled on July 20.  We have adjusted the calendar accordingly to produce as many audax rides given our limited resources early in the year so people can have their qualifying rides in before May 25.  However, there was still a clamour for a remedial ride and so we are introducing a 300km Audax in Baler on June 15.  The first 200km of the 300km Audax will be the exact same route as the 200km Audax ride on that day.  The last 100km will be a mix of Euraudax and our current format.  Again, the 300km Audax in Baler will only be open to those who just need this one last 300km Audax ride to nail their PBP qualifiers or to nail their Super Randonneur status.

If you fall under this category, please follow below instructions below to register on or before JUNE 9, 2019.  Only manual registration will be entertained:

A confirmation should be sent within 2 working days. If you don't receive any confirmation, please send a follow-up message.

3) We will determine a road captain for this ride and try to group you according to capabilities or willingness to ride together.  At least 1 of you in your small group have to record your ride in Strava.  The first 200km of the ride will be exactly the same as the official 200km Audax ride.  The rest will be in Euraudax style.  Carmela Pearson will be personally briefing you separately for this ride during the onsite registration on June 14 at 18onButon at 6PM.

Again, the 300km Audax in Baler is for the experienced audax riders only who are aiming to finish their last ride to reach their SR status and to nail their PBP qualifiers.  The last 100km will be unmarshalled but we will still definitely wait for you at the finish at 18onButon.  For any questions/concerns, please email cvserina@gmail.com.  See you in Baler and all the best!
