10/09/2023 | Carmela Pearson

We have just concluded the inaugural 200km Audax and 120km Populaire in Bukidnon last weekend.  Please check the below files for the tentative results and let us know by October 13 of any comments/questions so we can double-check from our end and do the necessary adjustments before we submit the results to Paris on October 14.  You can reach us at info@audax.ph.  Let us not spam the Facebook group/page of Audax Randonneurs Philippines.  Please note that your result reflects your elapsed time = scanned time at the finish.  It doesn't reflect the elapsed time in your Strava or GPS devices.

Bukidnon has always been in my radar.  I am a proud Seriña from Cagayan de Oro and have been cycling the CDO-Davao route via Bud-Da since 2007.  I know for a fact that the cycling in Bukidnon is not easy with its many rollers and climbs BUT I also know that the rides can be rewarding with beautiful vistas.  When multiple Ironman Kona triathlete, Jong Sajulga, proposed a route last year, I got excited.  When I finally made the reconnaissance trip early this year, I was sold and immediately set a date.  It is high-time that we put Bukidnon in the map of long-distance cycling in the Philippines!  With 2 Bukidnon-based athletes finishing strong in this year's Paris Brest Paris edition (Jong clocking in 68 hours and 12 minutes; Gregie Pamakid clocking in 75 hours and 35 minutes), 2023 is a good year for the inaugural Audax Bukidnon.

The Audax rides in Bukidnon are not for the faint-of-heart.  The 218km Audax route roughly has an elevation gain of 4,200 meters while the Populaire can't be underestimated with an elevation gain close to 1,200 meters.  While the 200km Audax ride is the toughest in the country post-pandemic, the Bukidnon routes also prove to be the most scenic.  We were blessed with cool and overcast weather around 95% of the time.  There were so many children along the route who kept on cheering our cyclists.  The motorists are polite and respectful of cyclists.  We had ZERO accidents.  The 200km Audax record has been set by Benedict Abad who clocked in an impressive time of 7 hours and 47 minutes.  Quite inspiring!

There are so many people to thank for the success of Audax Bukidnon.  Thank you to the Provincial Government of Bukidnon and the Provincial Tourism and Cultural Services Office.  Our utmost thanks to Honorable Provincial Governor Rogelio Neil P. Roque, Regional Director of DOT Northern Mindanao May Salvana Unchuan, Mayor Ernie R. Factura (Lantapan), Mayor Vergito O. Factura (Talakag), Mayor Miguel A. Silva Jr. (Pangantucan), Mayor Ma. Victoria O. Pizzaro (Don Carlos), Mayor Atty. Jose Joel P. Doromal (Maramag), Mayor Azucena P. Huervas (Valencia) and Mayor Atty. Jay Warren R. Pabillaran (Malaybalay).  Thank you to Sir Karl Fortich and Jong Sajulga for creating the spark for Audax Bukidnon.  I sincerely felt Jong's desire to stage an audax in his #homesweetBUKIDNONhome and we have had countless conversations on how we want it to be a success. This is the 1st Audax in the country where I didn't really have an active role in creating the route. This was Jong's playground and I was just too happy to approve and ride it.  Daghan Salamat sa sakit at sa unli-binaki, Jong! Thank you to TADECO and Anflocor for the unli-bananas at the checkpoints.  Thank you to Tirso@1470 especially Ms. Maricar Vazquez-Tan for the most beautiful and fully-stocked checkpoint with coffee, water, bananas, pastries and many more!  It is definitely the best checkpoint I've ever seen in any audax in the country!  Thank you to Mr. Cornelio Cruz of DOT Northern Mindanao and Atty. Romwell P. Roque for the coordination and groundwork needed.  Thank you to Centurion Cycling Club Mindanao under the leadership of Mr. Alexander Regaspi for their dedication to serve not just the long-distance cycling community in Davao but the growing randonneuring community of Mindanao!  From the planning to manning the checkpoints and tracking of cyclists, their passion to serve was evident.  Nothing like having veteran audax riders and Super Randonneurs to serve other randonneurs.  Iba kayo!  Last but not the least, thank you to the cyclists who toed the line last Saturday.  We saw cyclists from Manila, Cavite, Misamis Oriental, Lanao del Norte, Lanao del Sur, Maguindanao del Norte, Cebu, Cotabato, Leyte, Zamboanga del Norte, Davao de Oro, General Santos, Davao del Norte, Davao Oriental, Davao del Sur, Batangas, Compostela Valley and Quezon.  I would also like to personally thank the Dimaporos and The Road Runners... I truly felt Sir Hatta Dimaporo's presence and it was so inspiring to see his children continue Sir Hatta's legacy and love for the distance  Truly, lots of things to be thankful for this weekend!

Rest and recover, randonneurs!  Thank you, Bukidnon!
